Avebury & the Ridgeway, Wiltshire
'Start with a stroll around the ancient stone circle of Avebury, which is much bigger than its famous neighbour Stonehenge,' says David Else, 'then take the track that leads up to the equally ancient Ridgeway. Continue straight on to the peculiar boulder-field of Fyfield Down, or loop back to Avebury on a lower track, passing tumuli and other reminders of Britain's past. The high rolling downs of Wiltshire can be foreboding in winter, but in summer they offer great walks through open grassland under big skies.'
