The Black Mountain, Powys
After an initial upwards haul this mountain in the western Brecon Beacons delivers miles of high-level ridge walking with huge views. 'Even in winter it's not scary - one side plummets away in a sheer scarp, but the other is a wide reassuring moor,' says Jenny. Start near Glyntawe, then take the high ground north to Fan Brycheiniog, before curving west over Bannua Sir Gaer, down around the waters of Llyn y Fan Fach and along the base of the ridge back to the start.
