Slieve Bearnagh, Co Down
The Mourne Mountains are a compact range of granite-topped summits whose eastern slopes plunge to the Irish Sea. 'Aside from big vistas,' Jenny says, 'it's also home to the Mourne Wall, a 22-mile long edifice that winds over the summits of 15 mountains, and makes an excellent navigational handrail if the winter weather closes in.' Starting from Newcastle, you soon leave the town behind and hit wild country, joining the wall to summit Slieve Bearnagh and Slieve Meelmore.
