Canada

20 June-1 July. Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. This 10-day blow-out in 'Saskatoon' sees international jazz groups and leading Canadian musicians pumping out everything from jazz to gospel, dixieland to the blues.

Belgium

18 June-2 November. The city of Bruges will house a selection of rarely seen works by Salvador Dali, which have never before left the private home of the Italian family Albaretto. The exhibition is at the Kunstcentrum Oud Sint-Jan.

Wales

20-22 June. Gwyl Ifan (Folk Dancing Festival). At various venues, including Cardiff and South Glamorgan, the largest Welsh folk dancing festival of its kind. More information from Mr Dai James on 01222 563989.

Appleton Thorn, Cheshire

21 June. Bawming the Thorn. In this throw-back to summer solstice pagan rituals, schoolchildren decorate a thorn tree with garlands and ribbons, and dance around it singing the "Bawming Song".

Ireland

16 June. Bloomsday. A variety of events taking place in Dublin (above), including pub crawls and readings following Stephen and Bloom's steps, marking the day in 1904 on which all events from James Joyce's Ulysses were set.

Spain

20-29 June. In the coastal resort of Alicante the festival of Hogueras de San Juan takes place, in which midsummer's day bonfires are lit amid much revelry. The biggest night is 24 June.
