Capturing a moment visually, since the advent of digital photography and with increasingly sophisticated mobile phone technology, is as easy as point, click. But how do you catch a movement?

Once you experience, whether it’s a high-speed rollercoaster ride or a gentle stroll through a snowy field, can only truly be described with words and relived in memory. It’s yours forever.

Similarly precious are movements you’ve watched. Imagine if Rooney were to score a magical winning goal come 9 July: millions of England supporters, whether at the stadium in Munich or on the sofa in Kent, would treasure the moment that they saw that foot kick that ball.

Try to recall the way you felt when you first watched a ballet or saw Concorde take off. These movements take astonishing strength, bravery, discipline, ingenuity and determination. Some are firsts or record breakers. Several are witnessed by millions of people; others are more personal. From the speed of Kelly Holmes to the technological force that made Neil Armstrong’s small step possible, movement is something to celebrate.

Shell is in the business of helping its customers move better, and just thinking about movement brings some powerful images to mind. That’s why The Independent and Shell want to hear about your moving moments – which means anything that epitomises movement and sticks in the mind. Make a list of your favourites. Be as creative as you like. Whether you were stirred by your child’s first steps or smile at the thought of swimming underwater, relish in a memory of Michael Schumacher winning his seventh drivers’ world championship or wonder at Elvis’s dance moves, we want to know. In return, we’re offering you the chance to create some new moving moments of your own in Melbourne, Australia.
