TODAY is the feast day Saint Amator, bishop of Auxerre in the fifth century. He was mistakenly ordained by an elderly bishop attempting to conduct his wedding. His fiancee went to a convent and Amator was soon elected bishop. He found his successor in equally unorthodox fashion: having quarrelled with Germanus, the governor of Auxerre, he lured him to the cathedral, locked the doors, and, after giving him a tonsure, declared him bishop designate.
