Michael Schumacher will head into retirement at the end of the season, convinced that Lewis Hamilton is the right man to replace him at Mercedes.
According to the Sunday Times UK Rich List, Hamilton has a net worth of £55 million ($88m) as of May 2012, and it was rumoured he'd be offered an annual $12m from Mercedes compared to McLaren's rumoured $7.5m.
McLaren initially offered the Formula One driver a pay cut, before raising their offer when they realised they might lose him.
It's been said that it's partly to do with commercial rights, as Hamilton wanted greater freedom for some time to develop his own brand, and he was severely restricted by his McLaren contract. Mercedes offer him much greater freedom on the commercial side.
