The strongest praise for hospital play specialist Lynsey Steele comes from the parents of the children she helps.

"The children here wouldn't get by without Lynsey," says Amie Frost, the mother of one of the patients Ralph.

"She takes their mind off the pain. Without a doubt if she wasn't here then we'd have cracked up."

Lynsey's role, which is funded by the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC) and will be supported by the Independent's Give to Gosh appeal, is to help children relax and enjoy their time in hospital, but also to have the difficult conversations explaining their treatment.

From using a cartoon figure to explain Ralph's cannulas and and using medical props to take the fear out of new treatments, her role is vital on the wards. "

What we do here is about child first, and always," she said.
