BRRINNGG] From a callbox somewhere noisy, reversed charges, my poetry correspondent, Stan Trochee. He is upset at his omission from the 20 New Generation poets - leather jackets, provinces, angry, bad haircuts - whose work is to feature hourly on Radio 1.

I suggest that Stan's age might tell against him, but he says you are as young as you feel, which is not, I think, original. I tell him that another prodigious talent, Fiona Pitt-Kethley, 39, is also distraught at her absence. Stan immediately dictated the following, which I'm sure will make Melvyn Bragg and his panel think again:
