Michael Adams scored a fine win over Gata Kamsky, in Groningen two weeks ago. With 9.a3!? he took his well-prepared opponent out of the books and it paid quick dividends. Black's 12...a5 was over-optimistic and led to his Q-side pawns becoming blocked and an endgame liability after 13.a4!

Kamsky's exchanges on d4 were neatly exploited with 22.Bg3! delaying Qxd4 until it carried a threat to the d-pawn. Changing the guard on b2 with 37.Rd6! and 38.Bc3, Adams gradually moved on to the offensive. Kamsky could have resigned 15 moves earlier.
