The current President Obama looks narrowly ahead in state polls - but with the popular vote basically tied, independents keen on Romney, and concerns over turnout, the Republican challenger could win.

It's not only the reputations of Romney and Obama on the line tonight - across the US pundits have staked their credibility on predictions of how the final result will fall.
