Brookside Closed
Cheerio Tinhead, see you later Jimmy, take it easy Ron. The residents of Brookside Close will soon be adopting a lower televisual profile. Channel 4 has announced that it is moving the soap from its prime-time evening slot. So we will be seeing less of the dysfunctional Liverpudlians who have entertained the nation since 1982. Has it really been 20 years since they shuffled on to our screens with their scouse charm and guttural speech patterns?

This is an appropriate moment to recall Brookie's finer moments; pioneering lesbian clinches, exploding apartments, Trevor Jordache buried under the patio, Sinbad's hopeless love life. And we should be grateful to Phil Redmond's innovative series for giving us the likes of Anna Friel, Amanda Burton, Sue Johnston and Ricky Tomlinson. It's a sad day for soap addicts but don't despair; Crossroads came back.
