Claims that the BBC abandoned its serious arts coverage a decade ago are perhaps overstated. But it is undeniable that the arts have been badly neglected on the Beeb in recent years. George Entwistle, the executive editor of BBC2's new Culture Show, which will be broadcast on Thursday evening, has an excellent opportunity to rectify this. It is to be hoped that Mr Entwistle will be able to resurrect some of the brilliance which characterised the golden era of Omnibus, Arena and Humphrey Burton's pioneering Monitor. Those are the standards a public service broadcaster should be striving for.
