Get the ball rolling

So Sven Goran Eriksson thinks the recent intrusions into his private life are "sick" and wants closure on "Fariagate". With the return of the Premiership today he may get his wish. And not a moment too soon. At last, Nancy can stop throwing the crockery around. Perhaps Tord Grip ought to play a celebratory tune on the accordion. The pantomime starring the staff of the Football Association has amused the nation through the dog days of summer but it is now time to get down to the real footballing soap opera.

Let the mind games between Alex Ferguson and his urbane rival, Arsène Wenger, begin. Will Manchester United and Arsenal continue to share the spoils of the league, or will Jose Mourinho's Chelsea break the mould? The minor plot lines and fringe characters are no less intriguing. Just how long can Bobby Robson keep going at Newcastle United? Will Everton's Wayne Rooney fulfil his promise or go down that kebab-laden path to perdition trodden before him by Paul Gascoigne?

All this and more coming soon. Who needs Sven's private life now?
