Good Thing for Europe's currency
From Mr John Whitmarsh
Sir: In seeking a name for the proposed Euro currency, can we not remember Charlemagne? He ruled much of Europe, apparently successfully, and introduced the £sd system which we retained until 1968. His reign is generally regarded as a Good Thing.
The name "Carl" for our new currency would be conveniently short and pronounced similarly in most languages. It would not favour or offend any country's national pride.
Yours faithfully,
JOHN WHITMARSH
