While on this side of the Atlantic, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is busy grovelling to opponents of gay marriage for accidentally-but-not-actually calling them "bigots", the US Congressman Barney Frank remains unrepentant.

He's written a piece for the Huffington Post headlined 'Why I Called the Log Cabin Republicans "Uncle Toms"', in which he defends comparing members of the organisation which advocates LGBT rights within the Republican Party to the excessively subservient Harriet Beecher Stowe character.

"I am not surprised that members of the Log Cabin Republicans are offended by my comparing them to Uncle Tom," writes Frank. "They are no more offended than I am by their campaigning in the name of LGBT rights to elect the candidate and party who diametrically oppose our rights."
