From Mr G. R. Turnball

Sir: If 100 monkeys sat Mr Savill's economics exam in 2006 (letter, 5 September), he would no doubt ensure that exactly the same proportion got Bs as did students in Hull in 1996 - in line with his hypothesis. Would this prove that standards were rising, falling or static?

Yours faithfully,

G. R. Turnball
