ONLY decimated? Your correspondent may well be correct in saying that Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard was decimated - that is, one in ten killed - by United States bombing ('He's back - but CNN is ahead of him', 9 October) but I doubt very much whether that is what he means.

Is it not time that a quality newspaper was more careful about not using slipshod English?
