HELEN FIELDING lives in a different England from me ( Real Life, 7 February). I have lived here for 71 years and still find most people impeccably polite. I do not confuse deference with politeness. It is not a clerk's (waiter's, conductor's, etc) fault if he or she has been wrongly selected or badly trained.
