Elspeth Barker is wide of the mark when she describes the late R D Laing's advocacy of psychotropic drugs and community care as repugnant ("Flawed visionary of the broken heart", Review, 4 August). Many psychiatrists favour community care, and the description "psychotropic" applies not only to hallucinogenic drugs but also to a wide range of tranquillisers, all readily available on prescription.
