Sir: Although I look forward to Jo Brand's entertaining comments, I must take issue with her over her statement on domestic service (24 May).

Help in the home (whether male or female) can be essential to working women, not all of whom are middle class. I cannot see any stigma attached to an arrangement that suits both parties, and those who take up cleaning for a living usually do so because they wish to work part-time hours, for whatever reason.

I also cannot see why Jo Brand assumes that they will not receive a reasonable rate of pay for the job, as the going rate is around pounds 5 per hour, which is way above the suggested minimum wage.
