Sir: Even last night as I watched the news, before I read your leading article 'One saved, but many remain' (10 August), I found my sentiments running along the same lines.

I was pleased to write in support of your call to save Sarajevo. However, what is the point of this cosmetic political gesture to save little Irma Hadzimuratovic's life when, in all probability, if the West does nothing, this child will have no home to return to?

Sentimental one-off actions like this don't wash, Mr Major - in fact, they stink. Why not act and improve life for all the children in Sarajevo?

Yours faithfully,

10 August
