Letter: A local difficulty

Sir: It is unfortunate that Dale Campbell-Savours, the MP who raised in the House of Commons the question of the issue of certificates of vocational competence from our Business Centre at Whitehaven, did not contact our company first (report, 15 April).

Had he done so, he would have found that the company has been open and honest with all concerned since discovering impropriety by former members of staff at one of its 65 locations in January. We have already contacted the Department of Employment and the National Audit Office. The police have been made aware of the situation, and we have worked closely with our colleagues in the Cumbria Training and Enterprise Council to resolve this local difficulty.

Yours sincerely,

HUGH PITMAN
