Letter: Abortion debates
Sir: Dr. Tony Abrams writes (letter, 27 January) that the abortion debate is "about whether those who claim divine authority for their views should seek to impose them by law on women with other beliefs".
The silliness of this statement can be illustrated by replacing abortion with another moral-cum-political issue where Dr Abrams presumably takes a less libertarian view. Would he accept, for example, that the slavery debate of 200 years ago was about whether those claiming divine authority for their views (such as William Wilberforce) should seek to impose them by law on slave-owners with other beliefs?
