THE DEMOCRATIC Party candidate who ran against Richard Nixon in 1972 (Letters, 25 October) was not the liberal Eugene McCarthy, but the liberal George McGovern. McCarthy did his best in 1968 but even then he did not win the Democratic Party nomination, which went at that time to Lyndon Johnson's vice president, Hubert Humphrey.
