Sir: Judith Judd's article 'Bright students 'shun teaching career' ' (16 February) should focus more on why education has been shunned rather than students themselves turning their back on it. The reason why the 'brightest' students are not drawn to the classroom has more to do with this government's consistent downgrading of the profession in terms of skills, styles and prospects; more positive and encouraging statements are

required.
