Sir: Your leading article 'A change in Oxford's balance of power' (19 May) suggested that 'tenure for professors and lecturers . . . has the unintended consequence of slowing down change in university hierarchies'.

It may interest your readers to know that tenure for university staffs was abolished by the Education Reform Act 1988.

Yours sincerely,

TED NIELD
