Letter: Counting the cost of Britain's growing 'kar kulture'

Sir: Your praiseworthy leading article on 'kar kulture' (1 August) omitted one further point: the association of this outlook with so many of the more unpleasant social trends of recent years. These include: aggression, arrogance, selfishness, smoking (both in vehicle and without), loud, tuneless music, stupid and offensive slogans, and an astonishing disregard for the welfare of others, especially those more vulnerable than oneself. If in any doubt, replay the scenes recorded after Nigel Mansell's British Grand Prix victory.

Kar Kulture is Lout Culture. Hopefully, the prolonged collapse in car sales is another sign that Eighties values are ending.

Yours faithfully,

A. J. TURNBULL
