Sir: The meaning of "dap" as "plimsoll" has been enshrined in the name of a pub, "The Golden Dap", much frequented by the characters in a rugby cartoon strip published in The South Wales Echo.

As I recall from a valleys childhood, "dap" was to bounce gently, in contrast to "tamp", which was much more violent.
