Letter: Dollar speculation

Sir: With regard to Robert Fisk's article "Perfect dollar forgeries flood Middle East" (19 June), the report alleges that Iran was involved in the production or use of forged dollar bills. We would like to refute the allegations as completely unfounded. The baselessness of Mr Fisk's argument is demonstrated - perhaps unwittingly - by a parenthetical sentence as follows:

Other bank officials suspect Iran - Washington's favourite culprit, although it has produced no evidence to this effect.

You will agree that pointing the finger at a country purely based on speculative deduction goes against the basic principles of fair and fact- based journalism.

Yours faithfully,

Mohammad Safaei

Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran
