Letter: Don't visit Burma

WITH ALL respect to Norma Joseph (Letters, 28 November), who believes that all Burmese welcome tourism, I'd like to quote her a message from Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the NLD, of January this year: "I still think that people should not come to Burma because the bulk of the money from tourism goes straight into the pockets of the generals. And not only that, it is a form of moral support for them because it makes the military authorities think the international community is not opposed to the human rights violations they are committing all the time."

Of course people want tourism if it helps to raise their incomes, but this is a short-sighted solution according to the overwhelming majority of Burmese who voted for the NLD and their policies in the 1990 elections.
