Letter: Fashion for vicars

Sir: In answer to the letter from The Rev Hugh Beaven of 2 August, may I suggest he try an open-necked shirt with a detachable collar that fastens at the back.

Also, when riding his bike round the parish, he should wear a helmet suitably emblazoned. Modern cycle helmets are wonderfully insulated and cool - like the original pith helmets. Mine is fluorescent yellow with ancient Christian symbols of the Cross and the fish inscribed. Nobody ever has any doubt that the vicar is around and most people smile broadly when you come to the door.

Yours sincerely,

WILLIAM MATHER
