Letter: King's chatter

Sir: I have just read your article about King's College Chapel (24 December) and would entirely agree with your criticisms of certain recent accretions.

May I make my own addition to the catalogue of horrors? Two weeks ago, I sat in the chapel listening to a rehearsal for the Founder's Day concert, to be held that evening. A rehearsal, to be sure, but it did not deserve to be accompanied by the electronic chatter of the till in the gift shop. When I remonstrated (mildly), I was told that the till would not be operating during the actual performance.

O Tempora] O Mores] But then I am biased. St John's is my college.

Yours faithfully,
