From Professor Emeritus Douglas Johnson

Sir: When I was at school in 1933, I was told that Australia was about to leave the Empire and become a republic. I was told that this was all the fault of Harold Larwood and that it would be a tragedy.

Now that Harold Larwood has died, if Australia declares itself a republic some time in the future, this will be farce. And historians will be delighted.

Yours faithfully,

Douglas Johnson
