Letter: Lesbian mothers and lost grandparents

Sir: Maggie Brown (15 July) makes the point that, although lesbians may be able to 'bring up a baby satisfactorily', the child as it grows up misses out on the 'variety of role models, influences and interests' that enrich and motivate children in a family where there is both a mother and a father.

She might have added that a lesbian couple having a child by donated sperm is depriving that child of the love and influences of its paternal grandparents, often a source of help and comfort if the family runs into difficulties.

Yours sincerely,

BARBARA MUIR
