Letter: Lib Dems' proposals for medical overhaul

Sir: Although in complete agreement with your leading article on the Calman report ('The right medicine for better doctors', 5 May), I resent your assertion that 'politicians publicly accepted that 'doctor knows best' '.

The Liberal Democrat Federal White Paper Restoring the Nation's Health (February 1992) called for precisely those recommendations now put forward by Sir Kenneth Calman.

Would you have been less cynical about politicians colluding in the medical profession's 'net-work', if our policy had been known to you, or are sensible pragmatic policies simply too boring to report?

Yours sincerely,

MP for Rochdale (Lib Dem)
