Letter: London's nightmare

Sir: The seven Labour MPs for London constituencies who point out the scandal of the Government's failure to capitalise on EC grants to enhance the capital ('Waking up to a troubled city'; letter, 30 October) need to be supported if the degeneration of our great metropolis is to be halted.

There is no committed campaigning voice for London, only fragmentation since the death of the GLC and the setting up of unaccountable quangos that meet in secret and have no executive power to do anything except produce propaganda. We need realistic policies and funds to stabilise London and set it on a new strategy for rebirth if it is not to decay further: an air- polluted nightmare where the rising incidence of asthma is its sad badge of courage.

Yours sincerely,
