Letter: Luton's efforts set an embattled town on the road to economic recovery

Sir: You suggest that Vauxhall's Luton workforce has halved since 1984. Not true. We employ a total of 6,100 people at our various Luton activities - only 500 less than the total nine years ago. Significantly, Vauxhall car production in Luton has more than doubled in those nine years, to the 1992 record total of 170,353 - of which over 40 per cent were exported.

Our pounds 50m Luton site redevelopment programme has not only improved the appearance of the area dramatically, but also has released land for new business enterprises with the potential for 5,000 additional jobs.

Certainly, bad news is not hard to find in Luton. But there are many positive developments that should not be ignored.

Yours faithfully,

BRUCE WARMAN
