Letter: Nadir and the north Cyprus anomaly

Sir: With reference to your article by John Torode, are we not better off leaving him where he is? As the article says, there is little enthusiasm for another long drawn-out fraud trial. A trial would probably cost millions of taxpayers' money and then, if imprisoned, we also end up paying for Nadir's keep. The court has already secured pounds 2m from Mr Nadir as bail deposit and I doubt if any fine as a consequence of a trial would be any greater than that - so we are really better off without him. Mr Nadir is in self-imposed exile in north Cyprus. That is not necessarily an enviable position to be in.

Yours faithfully,

PHILIP CHIPPINDALE
