Sir: The letter from Peter Goldsmith QC (15 April) prompts me to suggest that the independence of a barrister is established when he or she is called to the Bar, and is not altered by the manner in which he or she then earns a living. The general Council of the Bar cannot make the Orwellian claim that all barristers are independent but some some barristers are more independent than others.
