Letter: Purposeful packaging

Sir: With reference to your leading article 'Even unto the yoghurt pot' (16 July), I recently had an old German friend staying with me. She was aghast at the superfluous packaging in our supermarkets. She said that in Hamburg, before she leaves the supermarket, she often takes off as much packaging as possible and leaves it in the store.

I can't help feeling that if enough people were to take up this habit manufacturers would soon have to respond.
