Letter: Reconciling religion and homosexuality
From The Rev Robert Wiggs
Sir: It is true that the churches are confused about sex. Your gentle leaders and James Fenton's mocking article (14 March) are right. But if the churches eventually become unconfused through affirming faithful same- sex relationships, it will not be through modifying scripture and tradition, but through drinking deeper at these sources.
When Jesus fought the religious leaders of his day over who was or was not unclean, both argued from the scriptures. He read them through the lens of experience alongside outcasts. They looked for proof texts. I want to ask all participants in this debate: "Who are your friends? From what place do you hold your opinions?".
Yours sincerely,
ROBERT WIGGS
