Letter: Science graduates cannot find jobs

Sir: I agreed with your leading article 'Urgent need for the appliance of science' (19 August), triggered by the A-level results demonstrating a fall in numbers opting for science subjects.

My son graduated from university with an engineering degree in June. He is now labouring for a builders' merchant for pounds 2.75 an hour. It is the only job he has been able to find.

Perhaps the country doesn't want scientists and technologists.

Yours faithfully,
