Sir: In reply to Miles Kington's Ballad to the RAC ('Lines written on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) . . ', 6 October) about how he could not resist joining the club 23 times on account of the patrolmen's winning smiles, I have been musing over the following reply (with apologies to Bob Dylan):
