Letter: Shameful campaign

Sir: In 1945 the Yugoslav economy was in tatters after years of Nazi occupation and guerrilla war. There was a serious shortage of food and basic supplies, and the British forces in Trieste decided to run food convoys. I was at 13 Corps HQ at the time, and remember that the first convoys were attacked and pillaged by the Chetniks.

It was only possible for supplies to get through if they were accompanied by an armed Allied escort. Custom dies hard.

Yours faithfully,
