Letter: Television violence and rising crime

Sir: Over the past 20 years I have watched countless commercials for dog food, without once feeling the urge to buy a can of the stuff. This is because I am not a dog owner.

Over the same period I have watched countless fictional television murders without ever feeling the urge to commit one myself. This is because I am not a murderer.

With proper comparisons, the apparent paradox between the influence of TV violence, and of TV commercials, noted by Elizabeth Young (letters, 9 March) seems to me to evaporate into thin air.

Yours sincerely,

FRANK ADEY
