Letter: Thatcher's legacy
Sir: I am surprised that you say (leading article, 13 February) that Margaret Thatcher was right to dismantle the power of the unions. The German economic miracle was based on co-operation between capital and labour, government and unions. The Thatcher revolution was based on emasculating the unions (while much exaggerating their power) and putting workers in their place. Churchill, incidentally, whom Thatcher sporadically invokes, preferred the German route to economic growth and social order. Major and company are struggling with the legacy of Thatcherism.
Yours faithfully,
PETER CALVOCORESSI
