Sir: I am writing to take issue with the opinion expressed in your editorial on the Winston Silcott case ('Silcott deserves his money', 2 August). Silcott was convicted of the violent murder of a young man, Anthony Brown: he has shown no apparent contrition for this wicked crime for which he was duly convicted, and for which he remains in prison on a life sentence.

How can any compensation be justified?

Yours sincerely,
