Letter: The true value of scientific research

Sir: In bygone days, rulers funded the researches of alchemists in the foolish hope of discovering a means of converting base metal into gold. Our rulers today (as in the Waldegrave White Paper) fund science research because of its 'potential for wealth creation'. Whatever the progress of science, human nature stays reassuringly constant.

Yours sincerely,

ROGER BARLOW
