Sir: The name for the proposed European currency unit should be short, pronounceable in the various languages, have no connections with past or present currencies, and be non-religious.

May I suggest the "Eunit", which seems to meet the above requirements. It would be divided into 100 "Eubits" - computer buffs would say 1,000. The abbreviation would be the "E", with the Escudo becoming the "Es".

As for a symbol for the currency, may I suggest the Parthenon representing Greece, where the whole thing is supposed to have started.

Yours faithfully,

V. SUTTON-VANE
